Kaldi's Circle

Named for the goat herder who found coffee first and couldn't keep it to himself. Membership isn't a discount code, it's a standing invitation back to where this all began.

The Legend

The Goat Herder Who Found Coffee

Sometime around the ninth century, in the highlands of Kaffa, Ethiopia, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed something was wrong with his herd. His goats weren't grazing. They were leaping, bleating, dancing along the hillside with an energy he'd never seen in them before.

Kaldi followed them to the source: a low, glossy shrub covered in bright red cherries. Curious, he tried a few himself. He felt the same lift his goats had felt, and he knew he'd found something worth sharing.

"Word of the strange, energizing berry reached a nearby monastery, and one monk did what monks do with anything they don't understand. He threw a handful into the fire."

What rose from those flames changed everything. The aroma was unlike anything the monks had smelled before, rich, warm, impossible to ignore. They raked the roasted beans from the embers, ground them, and dissolved them in hot water. By most tellings, it was the world's first cup of roasted coffee.

The monks found the drink kept them alert through long hours of evening prayer. So they made it on purpose, and they shared the recipe with monasteries across the region. From that one hillside, coffee began its journey outward: across the Red Sea to Yemen, through the Ottoman Empire, into Europe, and eventually into every cup poured anywhere in the world today.

Some even trace the word "coffee" itself back to Kaffa, the region where the story is set. True or not, the thread holds: every bag we roast, every cup you pour, carries a direct line back to that hillside and the herder who noticed something worth paying attention to.

Old Story, Same Instinct

The Parallels

01

Curiosity That Changes Everything

Kaldi noticed something extraordinary in an ordinary place, and it changed the world. Our founders noticed a chance to turn a bag of coffee into an education fund and a home for kids who need one. Same instinct, different century.

02

Shared, Not Hoarded

The monks didn't keep the fire-roasted secret to themselves. They passed the recipe on. Every bag we ship and every member who joins the Circle keeps that same instinct alive: find something good, pass it on.

03

The Shape of a Circle

Kaldi's goats didn't dance alone, and coffee has pulled people into a circle ever since: monasteries, coffee houses, kitchen tables. Ethiopia's own coffee ceremony, buna, is built entirely around one. It's the shape we built this program around.

04

It Never Left Home

Over a thousand years later, the beans in your bag are still grown a short distance from where Kaldi's goats first grazed. Subscribing isn't just a coffee habit. It's a standing appointment with the place coffee began, and with the kids in Woliso our mission was built to serve.

The Subscription

Introducing the Buna Bundle

"Buna" is the Amharic word for coffee, and the name of Ethiopia's coffee ceremony: beans roasted, ground, and poured fresh in front of the people you're sharing them with, cup after cup, for as long as the conversation lasts. The Buna Bundle is that ritual on a schedule. Choose your roast, choose your rhythm, and we handle the rest.

Why Join

More Than a Refill

01

Founding Recognition

Early members are the first names in the Circle, permanently. This program is new, and there's no going back to being the first.

02

First Call

New roasts, limited releases, and anything else we're not ready to announce publicly go to Circle members first.

03

A Direct Line

No chatbot, no ticket queue. Email coffee@addisuna.com and you'll hear back from someone who actually roasts your coffee.

04

Steady Impact

A recurring bag means recurring, predictable support for the Woliso Library rebuild, not just a one-time gift that ends at checkout.

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the LORD Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it."

Malachi 3:10

Pull Up a Chair

Membership starts with your first bag. Choose a roast, set your rhythm, and let the ritual do the rest.
